2. Check Name

The name (firm name) is the name of a merchant as registered in the Commercial Register, which is used in the course of business activities when entering into transactions and signing documents.


Requirements for a name:

  • it must include an indication of the type of merchant - “sabiedrība ar ierobežotu atbildību” (limited liability entity) or its abbreviation “SIA”; this indication must be placed at the beginning or at the end of the firm name;
  • it must be composed using letters of the Latvian or Latin alphabet;
  • it may include numbers;
  • it may include punctuation marks (such as full stops, commas, colons, quotation marks, etc.);
  • only the following symbols are permitted - &, @, %, +, =, the use of any other symbols is not permitted;
  • it must not include the names of state or municipal authorities (institutions), nor the words “valsts” or “pašvaldība”;
  • it must not include the words “Latvijas Republika” or their translations into foreign languages;
  • it must not contain misleading information regarding the type of commercial activity or legal form, including designations such as “AS”, “IK”, etc.;
  • it must not contain vulgar language or wording contrary to good morals;
  • where the name includes a designation of an administrative territory or populated place, it must not be identical to the official name of such territory or place; additional words, letters, or numbers must be included to ensure distinctiveness;
  • it must not be identical to, or confusingly similar to, an already registered trademark or part thereof; a search may be carried out in the Patent Office trademark database;
  • it must not be identical to, or insufficiently distinguishable from, the name of an entity already registered or applied for registration in the Register of Enterprises; differences consisting only of punctuation, spacing, or the use of uppercase or lowercase letters are not considered sufficient for distinctiveness.

The same name must be used consistently in all documents submitted.
